There’s something special about making matcha at home.
Not just drinking it, but also in preparing it. The slow whisking, the delicious complex notes, the warmth of the bowl in your hands. It becomes more than a drink. It becomes part of your ritual.
At MatchaKai, we believe matcha should feel intentional. A small moment in your day to slow down, create, and enjoy something beautifully crafted.
If you’re new to matcha, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to make a smooth, café-quality matcha at home.

How to Prepare Matcha
Making matcha at home is simple. All you need is:
-
High-quality Japanese matcha
-
Bamboo whisk (chasen)
-
Matcha bowl (chawan)
-
Sifter
-
Hot water
-
Optional: milk and sweetener for lattes
A good-quality matcha makes all the difference, creating a smoother, naturally sweeter, and more vibrant cup.
Step 1: Sift Your Matcha
Sift 4g of matcha (about 1–2 chashaku scoops) into your bowl.
Sifting helps remove clumps and creates a smoother drink.
Step 2: Add Hot Water
Add 40ml of hot water at 70–80°C.
Avoid boiling water, as it can make matcha taste bitter.
Step 3: Whisk
Using your bamboo whisk, whisk in a fast zig-zag "M" motion until a smooth layer of foam forms on top.
For the best results use a proper Chasen bamboo whisk
and Chawan ceramic bowl — handcrafted by artisans
in Nara, Japan and available at Matchakai.

Enjoy your matcha, your way.
Step 4: Get Creative with your Matcha Recipe
One of the most beautiful things about matcha is how personal it becomes.
Some people enjoy traditional matcha with only water. Others create iced lattes, strawberry matcha, coconut matcha, or vanilla matcha.
There’s no single “correct” way to enjoy it.
At MatchaKai, we love both the traditional side of matcha and the creativity people bring into their daily rituals at home.
Common Matcha Mistakes:
Using boiling water
This often causes bitterness.
Not sifting the matcha
This creates clumps and uneven texture.
Using low-quality matcha
Dull green matcha usually tastes harsher and less smooth.
Stirring instead of whisking
Proper whisking creates the creamy texture matcha is known for.
