A matcha latte is a delightful blend of vibrant green matcha powder and steamed milk, creating a creamy and slightly sweet beverage that's both refreshing and invigorating. Made by whisking high-quality matcha powder with hot water until frothy, and then combining it with your choice of milk, a matcha latte offers a perfect balance of earthiness and smoothness. It's often sweetened with honey or sugar, enhancing its natural flavors. This soothing drink is not only visually appealing with its rich green hue but also packed with antioxidants, making it a healthy and delicious alternative to traditional coffee-based lattes.
Using a fine mesh sifter, sift 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into your matcha bowl or a small mixing bowl. This helps to remove any clumps and ensures a smooth, lump-free latte.
Heat 2 ounces of water to about 175°F (80°C). Do not use boiling water, as it can make the matcha taste bitter.
Pour the hot water into the bowl with the matcha powder.
Using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small whisk, whisk the matcha and hot water together in a zigzag motion until the matcha is completely dissolved and frothy. This should take about 15-20 seconds.
If you have a milk frother, froth 6 ounces of your choice of milk until it is hot and has a nice layer of foam.
If you don't have a frother, heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until it is hot but not boiling. Use a whisk to create some foam if desired.
Pour the frothed or heated milk into a cup.
Add the whisked matcha mixture to the milk, stirring gently to combine.
Sweeten to taste with honey, sugar, or your preferred sweetener, if desired.
Enjoy your matcha latte immediately while it's hot. For an extra touch, you can sprinkle a little matcha powder on top as a garnish.
